Queensland Disability Housing Coalition
The Queensland Disability Housing Coalition
(QDHC) is an independent state-wide community based organisation.
The Coalition works to
- Promote greater consultation between Department of
Housing, people with a disability, families, service providers;
- Develop processes to ensure the participation of people
with disability and their support networks in policy and program
development;
- Provide feedback to the Department to improve housing options
for people with disability
- To raise awareness
across the housing sector and the wider community about
the barriers that people with a disability experience in
relation to accessing appropriate housing
To pursue these Aims QDHC works with people with a disability,
their families and support networks, to identify issues and
concerns related to housing. QDHC advocates within government,
community and private sector systems to enhance and extend
the provision of appropriate housing. Currently the Coalition
is funded by the Department of Housing to provide policy and
program advice to the Department in relation to housing for
people with a disability.
QDHC: Recipient of the 2008 Community Action Network (CAN) Award for Accessibility and Community Facilities Development
The CAN Awards celebrate and promote the efforts of groups and individuals from private, public and community sectors that have been successful in achieving social justice outcomes in the inner northern suburbs of Brisbane.
QDHC was selected to be the recipient of the Accessibility and Community Facilities Development Award to recognise our work done to highlight inclusive service practices and design principles. QDHC received this Award at an Award Ceremony on the 28 April, 2008. The Ceremony was attended by Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce, Governor of Queensland and our Award was presented by Arch Bevis, Federal Member for the seat of Brisbane.
We are delighted to accept this Award. QDHC has had a long history, over 20 years, of advocating and lobbying around accessibility and design issues so that all people are able to live meaningful lives, both at home and as part of the wider community. At a time where our future funding is uncertain we are pleased to receive this important acknowledgement of our work.
In receiving this Award we would like to thank CAN and our members and supporters. QDHC looks forward to a future where design and accessibility are no longer issues to be discussed or debated, as the community would be accessible to all, and to exclude anyone would be unthinkable.
