Queensland Disability Housing Coalition

Queensland Disability Housing Coalition

Queensland Disability Housing Coalition Inc. (QDHC) is a statewide, independent housing peak advocating for the rights of all people with disability and mental health issues.
QDHC works with people with a disability, their families and support networks, to identify issues and concerns related to housing.

QDHC strives to ensure people with disability and mental health issues have access to housing options which suit their needs, can choose from a range of support strategies which enable them to sustain that housing, and can be involved in relationships which they feel are in keeping with their chosen lifestyle.
QDHC advocates within government, community and private sector systems to enhance and extend the provision of appropriate housing.

QDHC does this through systems advocacy, policy development, consultancies, research and project work with people with disability and/or mental health issues.
QDHC is a self-funded organisation which seeks financial support from a variety of community and government sources to further its work and achieve its aims.

QDHC: Recipient of the 2008 Community Action Network (CAN) Award for Accessibility and Community Facilities Development

The CAN Awards celebrate and promote the efforts of groups and individuals from private, public and community sectors that have been successful in achieving social justice outcomes in the inner northern suburbs of Brisbane.

QDHC was selected to be the recipient of the Accessibility and Community Facilities Development Award to recognise our work done to highlight inclusive service practices and design principles.  QDHC received this Award at an Award Ceremony on the 28 April, 2008.  The Ceremony was attended by Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce, Governor of Queensland and our Award was presented by Arch Bevis, Federal Member for the seat of Brisbane.

We are delighted to accept this Award. QDHC has had a long history, over 20 years, of advocating and lobbying around accessibility and design issues so that all people are able to live meaningful lives, both at home and as part of the wider community.  At a time where our future funding is uncertain we are pleased to receive this important acknowledgement of our work.

In receiving this Award we would like to thank CAN and our members and supporters.  QDHC looks forward to a future where design and accessibility are no longer issues to be discussed or debated, as the community would be accessible to all, and to exclude anyone would be unthinkable.

2008 AGM & new committee:
QDHC celebrated it's 21st birthday with a "Coming of Age" theme at our AGM on the 26 November 2008.  The previous year we looked back at our history and asked the question: "Are we there yet?", and decided that despite some wins (and our share of losses too), there was still so much to do!

“Inclusive Futures” Project:
Last year (with funds from a DSQ Building Supportive Communities Grant) QDHC networked with individuals and groups throughout Queensland in preparation for our Inclusive Futures workshops for people with disabilities and their families in three Queensland regions (Brisbane, Emerald and Cairns).  The aim of the workshops was to provide people with disability and family members an opportunity to get information about housing and support issues, to raise any issues they are experiencing, as well as link with local service providers and key people of interest.   It also provided a good opportunity to workshop our resource (originally developed in 2005) called, "A Home of my own: Right, Rhetoric or Reality?".  Watch this space for a copy of the project report in the near future.

"AT THE TABLE" Project:
QDHC has recently completed the "AT THE TABLE" Project (with funds from a Mental Health NGO Capacity Development Grant provided by the Mental Health Council of Australia ).  This project enabled us to bring people with a lived experience of mental health issues together to share their experiences of housing and assist us to build our capacity around mental health issues; and invite people to become more involved in the work and the life of QDHC.  This was a fabulous project and we made connections with many people and organisations and networks that we hope will continue to be involved in QDHC.  A copy of our project report can be downloaded here.

TEN CRITICAL QUESTIONS:
At the time of the recent State Election, QDHC prepared a lobbying document called “Ten Critical Questions”.  This was sent out to all candidates them how their Party will respond to some critical housing issues for people with disability and their families.  A copy of this document can be downloaded here.

Australians for Ending Homelessness:
QDHC endorses this important initiative.  To find out more click the following link: http://www.homelessnessaustralia.org.au/site/AEFH.php
