COMMUNITY HOUSING

WHAT IS COMMUNITY HOUSING?

Community Housing is housing that is managed in the community at a local level. The units or houses are owned by a community group who rent them out to people on low incomes. The amount of rent paid is dependent upon your level of income. Community Housing is similar to public housing, in that you can stay living in the house until you want to move. This is provisional to rent and lease agreements.

Community housing can be more flexible in meeting individual needs; it is designed to involve the tenants as much as possible. Tenants can be involved in design and selection of the units and houses; management and the application for further funding. With Community Housing, while a relatively new form of housing provision, availability is still limited.

HOUSING CO-OPERATIVES

This special type of community housing is based on the six international principles of co-operation. In a Housing Co-operative [Co-Op] all of the units and houses are managed by the tenants, who form themselves into a community organisation. This enables people living in the houses to be in direct control of these houses and in effect you become your own lessor. There are a number of housing co-ops in Queensland. For further information about Housing Co-operatives and Community Housing contact the Queensland Community Housing Coalition [QCHC]. See below for details.

HOW DO YOU APPLY?

For information regarding Housing Co-operatives; ways to join; and starting one in your area, contact the QCHC.

The local TAAS Worker and Community Housing Division of DOH can provide you with details of existing community groups in your local area.

Forming a new community housing group or co-operative requires you to apply for funding from the Community Housing Division of the DOH. The Community Housing Division advertises once a year to attract funding applications from community groups. An information package is available which includes the application form, funding guidelines and details of the process.
