CRISIS OR EMERGENCY HOUSING

WHAT IS EMERGENCY HOUSING?

Crisis or Emergency Accommodation is:

Part of the Supported Accommodation Assistance Program [SAAP] and funded by the Queensland Department of Families, Youth and Community Care [DFY&CC].

The program funds independent community based organisations that run refuges and accommodation units for women, young people, single persons and others in crisis.

A short to medium term option however services provide some form of counselling or referral.

THE PROCESS

In the first instance:

Access the community help reference page or emergency page in the local White Pages. Crisis services are available in most large towns.

Police; Church based organisation or Lifeline.

Domestic Violence: For people who are experiencing domestic violence there is a 24 hour crisis and counselling line available. The crisis line operates across a statewide level.

This service provides:

  • telephone counselling free of charge for women and men; and
  • information and referral to women's refuges and crisis housing for men.

Wheelchair accessibility to refuges can be limited for people with a disability. Arrangements can be initiated following contact with the appropriate service.
